Substantial damages awarded in breast surgery cases
The specialist clinical negligence team at Raleys Solicitors has won substantial damages in 10 cases settled on behalf of women who made complaints against the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust following treatment by surgeon Puvaneswary Markandoo. The firm has a small number of further cases ongoing.

physical and mental – that these women suffered after undergoing breast surgery at Barnsley Hospital. However, for those whose cases have been settled, there is at least a sense of justice being served.
“The circumstances of the women Raleys has been able to help claim damages for were all different but equally distressing. Many were breast cancer victims who had had to undergo mastectomies, and were having reconstructive surgery as part of their rehabilitation. To suffer the kind of injuries these women suffered in those circumstances is horrific.
“One had to undergo repeated surgery because her stitches kept bursting open and leaking. Another had the circulation to her breast so badly damaged she is now forced to wear a prosthesis. Some of our clients have been put on anti-depressants and have needed counselling to help them cope with the trauma.”
