College students’ play enraptures audience of pensioners
Barnsley College students took to the stage during a major national convention to raise awareness of one of the most difficult issues facing older people.
The student actors performed a self-penned play at the 18th Pensioners’ Parliament in Blackpool in a bid to demonstrate the key issues surrounding people choosing a care home. The production was commissioned by Angela Galvin, of Barnsley-based Raleys Solicitors, who has represented the firm at the event for a number of years. She approached the drama department at the college in the hope of finding a way to tackle a difficult and sensitive subject.
Angela, who spoke about care home issues at the event last week, said: “Residential care is not the easiest subject to talk about. I asked the Barnsley College students to help me out with a performance which would deal with this issue in a light hearted but effective way.
“The students have been wonderful to work with and they did a fantastic job on the day. They managed to tackle some very difficult issues in a sensitive way which captured the attention of the audience and even made them smile!”
Raleys Solicitors has been a regular supporter of the Pensioners’ Parliament. Thousands of people attended the event at Blackpool Winter Gardens which was organised by the National Pensioners’ Convention. Representatives from all the main political parties also attended.
Josie Whiteley, head of creative media and entertainment industries at Barnsley College, said: “Putting this piece of theatre together has been a real learning curve for the students. They have shown great dedication and commitment with their research and particular skill in making a subject which people shy away from both entertaining and informative.”
