Pick-up-able poo for National Poop Scoop Week
The firmness of your pet dog’s poo is unlikely to be your favourite topic of conversation, but it is something that all dog-owners should think about next week.
It is National Poop Scoop Week from 23 to 27 June, when dog-owners across the country will be urged to
make an extra effort in cleaning up after their four-legged-friends. Dog waste costs local councils a staggering £22 million each year to clean, and dog fouling can turn public spaces into dirty no-go areas. The Dog’s Trust is encouraging all owners to ‘Grab it, Bag it, Bin it!’ – which is a far easier job if your pooch’s poo is pick-up-able.

Ken Stirk, technical director at pet food producer Burgess, which makes the popular Supadog range of dried dog food, said: “A high quality dog food results in firmer, smaller stools, which are not only easier for the owner to pick up, but also for the dog to pass. Look for a food that contains moderately fermentable fibres – beet pulp, for example – as these provide the right amount of bulk for firm stools and maximum absorption of minerals.”
Loose stools may also be an indication that your dog is suffering from a food intolerance. “If that’s the case,” added Ken, “It’s best to feed a hypo-allergenic food such as Supadog Wellbeing, which is free from soya, dairy, beef and wheat gluten – ingredients that can potentially trigger insensitivities. It’s gentle on a dog’s digestion and skin, with no added artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. However, if your dog’s loose stools persist, always seek advice from your vet to ensure they aren’t a symptom of a more serious problem.”
Supadog Wellbeing is available from Pets at Home and all good independent pet shops priced £25.99 for a 12.5kg sack or £6.49 for a 2.5kg bag.
