How to do well at school and help dig a well in Africa

Every parent wants their children to do the best they can at school. And a simple way to give youngsters a head start in the classroom is to make sure they get enough to drink during the school day. Research shows that keeping hydration levels up improves concentration and sharpens the memory.

Thirsty Planet water is now available in a new 330ml bottle, a perfect size for slipping into a lunchbox or school bag. Which means that kids can have a refreshing drink that’s free from calories, fat and sugar close at hand, to help them keep on top form.

If you buy Thirsty Planet, you’ll not only be helping your children but also giving a better start in life to children in some of the poorest countries in the world. A donation is made for every sale – 30p from a pack of six 330ml bottles – to its partner charity Pump Aid which helps rural communities in Malawi and Zimbabwe dig wells and install cheap and sustainable pumps to provide clean and disease-free water.

Amazingly one billion people in the world still don’t have access to clean water and 4,000 children a day die from diseases caused by poor quality water and sanitation. But with Pump Aid’s ingenious Elephant pump it costs just 50p to give someone clean drinking water for life and a leg-up onto the first step out of poverty.

Shoppers in the UK have recently helped Thirsty Planet reach its first milestone of funding a magnificent 2,000 pumps – that’s water for one million people.
The one millionth person to benefit is Malawian housewife Zunisha. With three lively school-age boys and a six month old baby boy to look after, life is hectic, but on top of the usual household chores she used to have to walk the two miles to the village’s only source of water and back with a heavy bucket on her head five times a day. Now the new village pump is just a stroll away, Zunisha has more time to spend with her boys and tend her vegetable garden which provides a more nourishing diet for the family and surplus produce which she can sell to help pay for school fees. But most importantly, her sons should be safe from contracting potentially deadly cholera or dysentery.

Thirsty Planet 330ml bottles are available in Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons stores, so stock up for the start of the autumn term and make a world of difference to more families like Zunisha’s.
